Wouldn't it be better for the author(s) to come up with their own characters, (oh, the irony, seeing as they clearly have done so...), and their own fictional backdrop rather than borrow so much yet change so much. Why not go the whole hog and re-write Mickey Mouse as a karate-kicking kangaroo?

It's been years since I re-read the novels. I don't recall Louis being described as going to brothels; gambling dens and squalid saloons, yes, so he would probably have encountered prostitutes there.

Yes, exactly. He never mentioned them. He talks about drinking, gambling but nothing else so I hated that in the show they took such liberty with his character. I really don't think he was in that mindset either, going through Paul's death. And did he even fancy women? We cannot tell. Perhaps, perhaps not. It was left unclear, which I like.
